Remember Canon Patrick Palmer? His vision shaped this very academy. The Palmer Catholic Academy stands as a testament to his dedication to Catholic education in Ilford.
Founded in 1961 as Canon Palmer Catholic School The Palmer Catholic Academy was the first Roman Catholic secondary school in the area. Bishop George Andrew Beck performed the opening ceremony. Before the academy existed this land was Aldborough Nursery Garden a local farm.
Canon Patrick Palmer served Ilford’s Catholic community for 50 years. He arrived in Ilford in 1869 and his work transformed the Catholic presence here. He built the first permanent church on Ilford High Road. He also established the Guildhall Catholic club. Churches in Manor Park and Barkingside also owe their existence to him.
Canon Palmer understood the importance of education. He opened the first Catholic school in Ilford in 1900. St Winefride’s school in Manor Park followed. In 1940 he secured the Cameron Road site for a secondary school. The school finally opened 13 years later.
Mr Murphy was the first headmaster. Mr Davis followed him after seven years. Mr O’Donnell then took over. Mr Maguire oversaw the transition to The Palmer Catholic Academy in 2001. In 2015 Mrs Moise-Dixon became the first female headteacher. Mr Downey a former student is the current headteacher.
Initially The Palmer Catholic Academy had a two-form entry. There were around 300 children mostly from SS Peter and Paul’s primary. It expanded to three forms and 500 students. Today the academy has 1200 students.
The original building is now Palmer block. Its 1960s design includes two large crucifixes. These symbolize the school’s Catholic identity. Later Heenan and Kolbe buildings were added. The Mother Teresa Sixth Form Centre and Bede House followed.
The Palmer Catholic Academy acknowledges Canon Palmer’s life each year. Students visit his grave in St Patrick’s Cemetery in Leytonstone. The academy promotes Catholic values and welcomes students of all faiths. The Palmer Catholic Academy continues to build on Canon Palmer’s legacy. It strives to provide a welcoming and supportive atmosphere. It fosters a love of learning and a strong sense of community.
