What secrets lie hidden within the walls of Château Cadet de Vaux? Today, we stand before this grand estate in Franconville, a testament to a fascinating past. While the château bears the name of Antoine Alexis Cadet de Vaux, a prominent figure from the late 18th century, its story began much earlier. In 1758, the Becquet family, originally from England and established in France in the 15th century, laid the foundation for this impressive residence. Despite their high social standing, the family spent limited time at the château, leasing it to Louis-Elisabeth de Tressan, the Count of Lavergne, in 1776. This remarkable man, a lieutenant general in the King’s armies and a member of several prestigious academies, unfortunately, met an untimely end in a carriage accident in 1783. In 1788, ownership of the Château Cadet de Vaux transferred to Antoine Alexis Cadet de Vaux. A man of many talents, Cadet de Vaux was a chemist, journalist, writer, and above all, a philanthropist. He served as the commander of the National Guard in Franconville during the French Revolution and even held the position of President of the General Council. Sadly, financial constraints forced him to sell the estate in 1820. The Château Cadet de Vaux changed hands multiple times before finally becoming the property of the town of Franconville in the late 20th century. Today, it serves as a beautiful reminder of the rich tapestry of history that unfolded within its walls.
