Remember those disappeared? The Santísima Cruz church in Buenos Aires holds their memory. This isn’t just any church. It’s a sanctuary a place of resistance. During Argentina’s dark years the Santísima Cruz sheltered families of the disappeared. It became a center for organizing protests and demands for justice.

The Santísima Cruz church wasn’t just a place of worship. It was a hub of activism. Religious figures immigrants and human rights defenders met regularly. They planned actions against the dictatorship. They raised funds for publications denouncing the disappearances.

Their courage was tested. Alfredo Astiz infiltrated their meetings. He pretended to be a brother of a desaparecido. His true identity a member of the Navy’s task force. He gathered information to betray them.

On December 8 1977 tragedy struck. Astiz led a raid on the Santísima Cruz. Mothers of Plaza de Mayo like María Ponce de Bianco and Esther Ballestrino de Careaga were seized. So were the French nuns Léonie Duquet and Alice Domon. Other activists too were taken.

The victims were tortured and murdered. Then their bodies were thrown into the sea. Years later some remains were found. They were buried here at the Santísima Cruz. Their sacrifice is a reminder of the church’s role during the dictatorship.

The Santísima Cruz stands as a symbol of defiance. It stands for the fight for human rights. The church is a place of sorrow but also a place of enduring hope. The struggle for justice continues. The Santísima Cruz remains a powerful symbol in Buenos Aires. It is a tribute to those who fought for freedom.
