Róka-hegy

Across the Budapest cityscape, Roka-hegy stands. It offers a unique blend of natural beauty and human interaction. Roka-hegy is not as famous as its neighbor Hármashatár-hegy. Yet it boasts exciting sights and panoramic views. It sits on the administrative border of Budapest, inviting exploration. The Szentendre HÉV train to Csillaghegy station offers the easiest access. From there, follow the red triangle signs. A steep climb of over a hundred meters awaits you. The full route takes about four hours. Exploring all the sights might fill a day. Before Greater Budapest, Roka-hegy lay outside the city limits. The border ran in front of it, in the Csillaghegy valley. When Békásmegyer joined Budapest, Roka-hegy’s northern part became part of the capital. It urbanized slowly in the late 20th century. Interestingly, there is no actual “Star Hill” (Csillag-hegy). The name Csillaghegy refers to a holiday resort near the spa, named at the beginning of the last century. So, Csillaghegy lies in the valley. The hills nearby have different names: Roka Hill, Péter Hill, and Arany Hill. From the Csillaghegy HÉV station, follow the red triangle to the mining pits. These three pits form a nature reserve. They house valuable plant and animal species. Educational trails, like the red T trail, start here. Roka-hegy’s limestone quarries supplied material for Budapest’s classicist palaces in the 19th century. Many city buildings contain limestone from here. The mountain consists of crystalline limestone with a striking appearance. The educational trail signs point out geological and biological features. The mine cavities look like a miniature Grand Canyon. This sight alone is worth the trip. If you prefer an easier approach, a one-kilometer walk from the Úröm cemetery parking lot leads to Roka-hegy. Strange rock formations carved by water or crumbling over time, offer captivating views. Numerous small cavities and passages were formed by ancient waters flowing through the decaying limestone. The rock walls, popular with climbers, now host many climbing routes. Firesites dot the pit bottom. Their legality for wildlife protection is unclear, but no prohibition signs were visible. From the hilltop, enjoy excellent views in several directions. You can see the Gödöllő Hills, the eastern and Buda Hills, the southern Pilis, Buda Castle, and Gellért Hill. Looking southeast toward the Great Plain, only the tallest city buildings appear on the horizon. This creates a unique view. Roka-hegy, being not very high, and the flat southeast topography contribute to this effect. Sadly, real estate almost entirely surrounds Roka-hegy. This impacts the perception of the natural environment. Houses loom over the pit, raising ethical concerns.
