“A power plant with an American twist?” you might ask, gazing at Svanemølleverket. Right here in Copenhagen’s Nordhavn, Svanemølleverket stands as a testament to Denmark’s energy history. Constructed between 1947 and 1953 by Københavns Belysningsvæsen, this power station was initially designed to burn coal, a common practice in the post-war era. Architect Louis Hygom, inspired by 1930s American high-rise and factory architecture, gave Svanemølleverket its distinct look. The reinforced concrete structure, clad in red brick, presents a striking blend of industrial functionality and architectural flair. Originally, Svanemølleverket served the dual purpose of supplying electricity and district heating to Copenhagen. Its importance grew in 1959 with the completion of its full expansion. This included six boilers and five turbines, significantly boosting its capacity. A major shift occurred in 1985. Svanemølleverket transitioned from coal to natural gas and oil, reflecting a global move towards cleaner energy sources. The plant’s role also evolved, primarily focusing on providing district heating to the Greater Copenhagen area. Further modernization in 1995 saw the addition of a gas turbine, known as unit 7, replacing two older generators. Interestingly, despite its industrial nature, Svanemølleverket has a surprisingly artistic touch. The huge glass windows, reminiscent of American factory design, flood the interior with light, creating a cathedral-like atmosphere. This characteristic makes Svanemølleverket a unique blend of industrial power and architectural beauty. Today, Svanemølleverket faces an uncertain future. Ørsted vacated the facility in 2023, ceasing heat production, and ownership has transferred to “By og Havn.” Discussions are underway to potentially relocate the Technical Museum from Helsingør to this iconic location, offering a new chapter in Svanemølleverket’s history.
