In 1991 a significant event unfolded. Master Cheng Yen received the Magsaysay Community Leadership Award. This prestigious award included a substantial cash prize. Master Cheng Yen selflessly distributed the prize money. It went to victims of the China floods and the Mt Pinatubo eruption. This act of compassion resonated deeply within the Filipino-Chinese community. It laid the groundwork for the Tzu Chi Foundation’s arrival in the Philippines.

The Tzu Chi Foundation a global Buddhist humanitarian organization arrived in the Philippines in 1994. A group of Filipino-Chinese volunteers spearheaded its establishment. Inspired by Master Cheng Yen’s unwavering compassion they pledged to spread Tzu Chi’s mission of love. Their initial efforts were modest. They gathered seed money from approximately 200 donors. This paved the way for the foundation’s formal inauguration on November 8 1994.

The early Tzu Chi volunteers were remarkable. They were primarily civilians and doctors. They embarked on charity missions providing much-needed medicines. They bravely ventured to remote and devastated islands. They delivered essential food and medical aid. Their dedication exemplified the heart of the Tzu Chi Foundation. Their first major response was to the devastating 7.1 magnitude Mindoro earthquake in 1994.

The Tzu Chi Foundation’s commitment to medical missions became legendary. Volunteers demonstrated ingenuity and resourcefulness. They established clinics in unexpected places such as classrooms. They adapted and improvised utilizing whatever resources were available. Their dedication impressed even skeptical Taiwanese doctors. The Philippine medical missions eventually became models of compassionate and effective aid.

In 2005 the Tzu Chi Foundation acquired land in Sta Mesa Manila. They purchased a 4.5-hectare plot from the Sisters of Mary. Their vision was to create a center for their numerous programs. The Tzu Chi Great Love Campus partially opened in 2006. It immediately began offering free services at an Eye Center and a Dental Clinic. The Eye Center provided cataract treatment retinal detachment repair and corneal transplants. By 2013 it had served over 30000 people. The Dental Clinic offered free dentures and held regular mobile clinics. The campus represents the culmination of years of dedication and serves as a beacon of hope.

The Tzu Chi Foundation’s impact on the Philippines is substantial. From its humble beginnings it has grown significantly. It continues to provide invaluable aid and support to countless individuals across the archipelago. The story of the Tzu Chi Foundation in Manila is a testament to the power of compassion.
