Ever wondered how pilots learned to dance on the wind? At Farkashegy Airfield, the story of Hungarian flight unfolds. Farkashegy Airfield, nestled near Budakeszi, has been a cradle of aviation since 1929. It’s one of Hungary’s oldest gliding sites. Imagine a time before powerful engines. Pilots at Farkashegy Airfield relied on “csörli” launches, essentially a catapult system. Because the ridge sits perpendicular to the prevailing winds, early gliders could enjoy extended flights. These brave aviators would launch from the hilltop, then land back up top, ready for another thrilling ride. Farkashegy Airfield later moved down to the valley in 1952. The airfield evolved. Winches and motorized tow planes replaced the csörli. The original airfield expanded from a simple dirt field to a proper runway. Two prominent clubs, the MÀV Repülőklub, established in 1930, and the Aeroklub Farkashegy, founded in 1942, took charge. They leveled the ground, brought in electricity, and built hangars and a fueling station. Farkashegy Airfield hosted several international flight meetings in the 1980s. Today, the airfield still boasts four hangars, a fueling station, and even a few vintage aircraft resting on its grounds. Farkashegy Airfield is a testament to the enduring spirit of flight. It is a place where the past takes wing and soars into the future.
