Named after the playwright Pierre Corneille Rue Corneille in Paris’s 6th arrondissement is a charming street with a rich history. It’s a relatively short street only 55 meters long but it holds a significant place in Parisian history.

The street wasn’t always there. It appeared around 1780 thanks to architects Peyre and Wailly. Their plans were part of a larger project the creation of the Théâtre-Français in the Saint-Germain district. This theatre later became the Théâtre de l’Odéon. The street was thus named in honour of the famous playwright.

Rue Corneille’s history isn’t just about its creation. It’s also about its changes over time. Until 1965 the street extended further ending at Rue de Vaugirard. The creation of Place Paul-Claudel however shortened Rue Corneille. This seemingly small change reflects the constant evolution of Paris’s urban landscape.

The street is home to the Théâtre de l’Odéon a prominent Parisian theatre. This theatre adds to the cultural significance of the street. It also features a plaque honouring Jacques Guierre a member of the French Forces of the Interior (FFI) who was killed there during the Liberation of Paris. These details give Rue Corneille a unique personality.

Even in literature Rue Corneille makes an appearance. In Honoré de Balzac’s novel Z Marcas characters inhabit a building on the street. This literary connection adds another layer to the street’s history. It shows how it has inspired artists and writers throughout the years.

Rue Corneille may be a small street but its story is significant. It’s a testament to the urban evolution of Paris and a symbol of the city’s enduring cultural richness. So next time you’re near the Odéon remember the story of this unassuming yet captivating Parisian street.
