“Our Lady of Health,” a simple phrase. But it carries centuries of hope within these walls of the Santuário de Nossa Senhora da Saúde.

Let’s step back in time to 1505. Gunners of Lisbon founded a hermitage here. They dedicated it to Saint Sebastian. He was believed to protect against war, famine, and plague.

Then, a devastating plague swept through Lisbon in 1569. Thousands perished. The people sought solace. They placed a statue of Our Lady of Health in the chapel. From then on, the chapel was dedicated to her.

Imagine the scene. Desperate citizens praying for an end to the suffering. They pleaded for health and deliverance. Our Lady of Health became a symbol of hope during dark times.

The Santuário de Nossa Senhora da Saúde suffered damage in the great earthquake of 1755. But it was rebuilt. The portico dates back to the early 18th century. It is attributed to João Antunes.

Notice the chancel. It is decorated in gilded, green, and white woodcarving. It reflects the Rococo style. The altarpiece houses a statue of the Patroness.

For centuries, the procession in honor of Our Lady of Health has been a vital event. It has been one of Lisbon’s most important processions since the 16th century. Every year, on the first Sunday of May, the Procession of Our Lady of Health occurs. It thanks and asks for protection from the Virgin Mary. It is Lisbon’s oldest religious procession. It continues to this day.

The Santuário de Nossa Senhora da Saúde may seem unassuming. Its facade is relatively simple. Yet, inside, it holds a comforting atmosphere. Images of saints adorn azulejos. There is a wooden floor and wooden benches. The altar completes the scene.

Take a moment to appreciate this sanctuary. It stands as a testament to faith. It represents resilience. It embodies the enduring power of hope in the face of adversity. The Santuário de Nossa Senhora da Saúde is more than just a church. It is a living story. It is a reminder of Lisbon’s past. It is a beacon of faith for the present.
