Amidst the vibrant tapestry of Munich, Weißensparrk unfolds as a hidden gem. It beckons visitors with its tranquil charm and rich history. Weißensparrk sprawls across 8.2 hectares in Obergiesing, a district in southeastern Munich. The park’s boundaries are defined by Setzbergstraße to the north, Sintpertstraße to the east, Weißenhauserstraße to the south, and Untersbergstraße to the west. Weißensparrk stands as the largest green space in the district, surpassed only by Ostfriedhof and Friedhof am Perlacher Forst. During summer, the park’s Festwiese transforms into a vibrant hub, hosting a variety of events from lively summer festivals to captivating circus performances. A non-public sports field, tucked away in the park’s northeastern corner, primarily serves the surrounding schools. Just across the quiet Weißenhauserstraße, the Katzenbuckel green area extends Weißensparrk’s embrace. It offers a diverse range of recreational facilities including a sledding hill, a playground revitalized in 2016, ping pong tables, a soccer field, and a dirt park. Interrupted only by the Mittlerer Ring near the St.-Quirin-Platz U-Bahn station, a green corridor stretches about 1.5 km to Tiroler Platz in Harlaching. This narrow, approximately 100-meter-wide corridor, also boasts various recreational facilities. Following a natural slope that delineates the border between Giesing and Harlaching, it provides a stunning vista of the FC Bayern Munich training grounds. Between 2009 and 2010, under the “Urban Development and Social City” program, Korbinianplatz within Weißensparrk underwent a transformation. The landscape architecture firm Keller Damm Kollegen spearheaded the redesign. Now, hinkelstein-like boulders of weathered granite from the Bavarian Forest punctuate the park, adding a unique character. In 2015, the southeastern section of the park was further enhanced based on designs by the Freiraum office from Freising. These boulders, reminiscent of the area’s past as a gravel pit, are strategically placed throughout the park. They cluster densely in the central playground area and gradually disperse towards the park’s edges. Marking entrances, path intersections, and sightlines, these boulders, some taller than a person, invite interaction and play. The redesign of Weißensparrk brought together scattered playground areas into a centralized location. This thoughtful arrangement not only simplifies supervision for parents but also features inclusive play elements, ensuring accessibility for children of all abilities. A path lined with wild cherry trees, known as the “Way of Flowers,” meanders through the park, connecting its various sections. The pathways themselves have been completely repaved, enhancing accessibility. Near the Mittlerer Ring, a protective barrier of hornbeam trees mitigates traffic emissions. Weißensparrk stands as a testament to community engagement, thoughtful design, and the preservation of natural elements.
