“What makes this mosque so special?” I asked myself as I approached Masjid Jami’Ar-Rohman. Masjid Jami’Ar-Rohman stands as a testament to faith and community. Let’s explore its story together.
Masjid Jami’Ar-Rohman was completed on November 27 1999. The mayor of South Jakarta inaugurated it. His name was Drs Abdul Mufti. Ar-Rahman means The Most Gracious. It is one of Asma’ul Husna.
The mosque features a modern minimalist architecture. Its base form is a box. The four corners of the building protrude for variation. It incorporates Middle Eastern elements. Five gold-painted domes adorn the structure. The domes resemble old bicycle bells. The largest dome sits in the center. Four smaller domes are at each corner. Sadly it lacks a minaret.
The building has two floors. The front is under construction for expansion. This expansion slightly detracts from the mosque’s aesthetic. The first floor spans about 250 square meters. The mezzanine covers about 200 square meters. Including the terrace the total area is 650 square meters. It can accommodate around 1300 worshipers.
A six-sided void sits in the center front. A four-tiered crystal chandelier hangs from the ceiling. It has a candle motif. The configuration is 4-8-12-16.
White marble tiles cover the floor. They are covered by green carpets with shaft lines. Circular ornaments decorate the dome’s interior. They feature gold yellow blue green brown and black colors. The center displays the word Allah. It is surrounded by Asma’ul Husna.
The altar walls are covered in gray marble. On the right is a stainless steel calligraphy of Allah. The left displays the name of Prophet Muhammad SAW. Antique-style clocks stand at the front corners. A digital mosque clock is on the left side of the altar.
The mihrab is a niche with a curved top. Its edges resemble pillars. The mihrab is 3 meters wide. It is 4 meters high and 1.5 meters deep. Inside are a prayer rug for the Imam and a mimbar. The mimbar is made of wood. It has carvings and the mosque’s name on the front.
Seven split AC units cool the first floor. Six AC units and four wall fans cool the second floor. Circular staircases on the front corners lead to the second floor. Each has 29 steps. Two 32-inch LED TVs on the second floor display the khatib during the sermon.
Masjid Jami’Ar-Rohman provides a comfortable and spiritually enriching space. It is a testament to Jakarta’s diverse religious landscape.
