Have you ever wondered about the small parks tucked away in the neighborhoods of Chicago? Lee Park, nestled in the Ashburn community, is one of these charming hidden gems. It’s a place where families can relax and enjoy the outdoors. Lee Park tells a story of community growth and dedication, a story that unfolded in the latter half of the 20th century. You see, the Ashburn area wasn’t always densely populated. It was only after 1940, with the boom of industrial development, that families started making it their home. In just ten years, the population grew from a modest 7,000 to a bustling 40,000 residents. This rapid growth presented new challenges, especially the need for green spaces. A group of dedicated residents, the Parkview Civic Association, recognized the importance of a park for their community. They started a campaign to get a small park built at the southern border of Ashburn. Their efforts paid off. The City of Chicago acquired the quarter-acre lot in 1959 and the park became a reality two years later. In 1962, this playground was built by the Chicago Park District, bringing joy to generations of Ashburn children. But there’s more to this park than just swings and slides. Lee Park is named after John M. Lee, a man who believed strongly in the importance of parks and recreation. He dedicated his life to public service, serving as state representative and senator for many years. His legacy lives on in this small park, a testament to his vision and dedication. Lee Park is a place where you can escape the hustle and bustle of city life, a true testament to the power of community and the enduring value of green spaces.
