“Ahoy there, mateys!” boomed a voice, startling a young boy. He looked around to see a weathered sailor leaning against the BV 2 Vegesack. “Didn’t I see ye starin’ at this fine lady?”. The boy, a little scared, nodded shyly. The sailor winked. “She’s a beauty, ain’t she? This here’s the BV 2 Vegesack, a grand old lady of the sea.” So begins our tale of the BV 2 Vegesack, an iron sailing logger built in 1895. This majestic vessel, now a protected monument, is more than just a ship; it’s a time capsule, echoing with tales of daring voyages and the golden age of herring fishing.

Imagine, if you will, the year 1895. The BV 2 Vegesack, fresh off the slipway at the Bremer Vulkan shipyard, embarks on her maiden voyage. She’s christened with the fishing number BV 2 and destined for a life at sea, joining the ranks of the Bremen-Vegesacker Fischerei-Gesellschaft’s first series of loggers. The BV 2 Vegesack, like her nine sister ships, was a vital part of the North Sea herring fleet.

Picture her now, sails billowing, battling the waves on her way to the legendary ‘Dogger Bank’, a prime fishing ground. Fourteen souls brave the elements on each journey: a captain, a first mate, seven sailors, three deckhands, and two ship’s boys. Life on board is harsh, the work back-breaking, but the camaraderie strong. They work tirelessly, hauling in kilometer-long drift nets teeming with silvery herring. Each fish is meticulously gutted, salted, and packed into barrels, ready to be brought back to Vegesack.

But the BV 2 Vegesack’s story doesn’t end with fish tales. In 1922, she traded her fishing nets for cargo holds, reincarnated as the ‘Lili’, a freight sailor. She sailed for various owners, her hold filled with goods instead of herring. From 1939 to 1971, she found a new home in Sweden, even sporting new names: ‘Monika Hansen’ and later ‘Nostra’. But fate, it seemed, had other plans. Lovingly restored in Hamburg, the once mighty logger returned to her namesake city, Vegesack in 1989.

Today, the BV 2 Vegesack, now a proud monument, stands as a testament to a bygone era. She serves as a living reminder of the hard work, camaraderie, and perilous beauty of life at sea. So, next time you see her docked, take a moment. Listen closely, and you might just hear the whispers of the sea and the echoes of her rich history.
