Did you know that the Rudolf-Schilling-Häuser were erected by the Dresdner Spar- und Bauverein? Rudolf Schilling himself headed this association. These houses stand between Wormser Straße and Holbeinstraße. They were built in 1910 and 1911.

Rudolf Schilling was a well-known Dresden architect and Baurat. He was born in Dresden on June 1 1859. He died there on December 19 1933. Rudolf was the eldest son of the sculptor Johannes Schilling.

Schilling’s architectural journey began at the Kreuzschule in 1872. He later studied at the Polytechnikum under Karl Weißbach. It was during this time that he met Julius Graebner. Graebner became his future business partner. Their connection remained strong even when they worked in Berlin.

In 1887 Rudolf Schilling married Elfriede Hantzsch. For his father’s sculptures he built the Schilling-Museum on Pillnitzer Straße. It was destroyed in World War II.

The architectural firm Schilling & Graebner was founded in 1889. Julius Graebner and Rudolf Schilling together started it. Schilling also led the Dresdner Spar- und Bauverein. This association built the Rudolf-Schilling-Häuser based on his plans.

Like Graebner Rudolf Schilling was a member of several groups. These included the Donnerstags-Vereinigung Dresdner Architekten. He also belonged to the Dresdner Künstlergruppe Die Zunft. He was a member of the Sächsischen Altertumsverein. Schilling also joined the Deutscher Werkbund.

Rudolf Schilling held the title of Königlicher Baurat. He had residences on Pillnitzer Straße 69 and Krenkelstraße 2. His firm’s offices were located on Moritzstraße 8b and Kleine Frohngasse 1. After his death he was buried in the Johannisfriedhof.

Schilling and Graebner’s firm left behind a diverse body of work. This is evident in the various building tasks they undertook. It is also visible in the different architectural styles they used.

Their work included villas and churches. They also designed housing in Dresden. One example is the Rudolf-Schilling-Häuser.

Schilling’s architectural influence extended beyond residential buildings. He contributed to public and private projects. These included the König-Albert-Bad in Bad Elster and the Augusta-Schule in Cottbus.

Schilling’s legacy lives on through his buildings. The Rudolf-Schilling-Häuser stand as a testament to his vision. They also represent his contribution to Dresden’s architectural heritage. As you observe these houses remember Rudolf Schilling’s impact. Think of his dedication to creating affordable housing. Consider his role in shaping Dresden’s urban landscape.
