Can a church rise from ashes? New Saint Mark Missionary Baptist Church in Dallas can answer that. This church has a history of resilience. It’s a story of faith, fire, and fellowship. New Saint Mark Missionary Baptist Church began humbly in the summer of 1903. Religious leaders saw the growing need for another place of worship in East Dallas. Rev. C.L. McPherson, Rev. A.S. Jackson, Rev. Z.T. Partee, and Rev. S.G. Gates led the formation of New Saint Mark Missionary Baptist Church. The small congregation first met in a simple 20′ by 30′ box structure. In 1917, this was replaced with a proper wood-framed church, complete with a bell tower and baptismal pool. The church thrived under dedicated ministers like Rev. L.D. Bell. A brick building was constructed in 1954 under Rev. A.D. McGraw. Tragedy struck in 1962 during Rev. C.A. Wilson’s leadership. A devastating fire destroyed the church building. The congregation persevered, holding services at Roe’s Chapel Baptist Church thanks to Rev. J.D. Olgetree. Within nine months, New Saint Mark Missionary Baptist Church was rebuilt. It included new classrooms and a Hammond organ. The church continued to grow. Under Rev. Allen G. Madison II, starting in 1984, eight more lots were purchased, a church bus acquired, and outreach ministries implemented. The sanctuary was renovated in 1995. A vision for a Family Life Center began to take shape. The new Family Life and Educational Facility was finally dedicated in August 2004. This 7,000 sq. ft. facility, with classrooms, a fellowship hall, and a commercial kitchen, became a hub for the church and community. New Saint Mark Missionary Baptist Church has been an active member of the Galilee Griggs Memorial District Association of Baptist Churches. In 2006, they also joined the Southern Baptist Convention. From a small wooden structure to a modern facility, New Saint Mark Missionary Baptist Church embodies the spirit of perseverance. It stands as a beacon of faith in the heart of Dallas.
