In 1966 a new Baptist fellowship was planted in Wheelers Hill. This was the humble beginning of Waverley Baptist Church. The area was then part of the City of Waverley hence the church’s name. Initially 23 people attended meetings led by Rev Grenville Hinton. They met in various locations before finding a permanent home.
Waverley Baptist Church’s journey was not without its challenges. The planned purchase of land was disrupted by the Mulgrave Freeway development. The church persevered. They purchased a Manse and Chapel at 104 Watsons Rd Glen Waverley. This served as their home for six years. A significant event occurred on May 4 1969. The fellowship officially became Waverley Baptist Church with 18 founding members.
The current site at the corner of Lum and Waverley Roads was purchased in 1969. Construction began. Tragically during construction the first full-time pastor David Wilson passed away. Despite this setback the church continued. The building opened on December 8 1974. A dedication service was held. The keys were given to foundation member Mrs Jean MacFarlane.
The church building has seen many expansions over the years. A worship area was added in 1985. A kitchen was added in 1995. Waverley Baptist Church has also seen the creation of strong youth ministries. The Boys’ Brigade and the Girls’ Brigade were founded in 1981. They remain an integral part of the church’s outreach.
In the late 2000s a major renovation took place. The church received a much-needed facelift. The old brick walls and interiors were replaced. A new slanted cross and angled red beam now stand proudly. A new kitchen foyer and back hall were also added. The renovation was completed in May 2014. A dedication service was held to celebrate the 45th anniversary of the church.
Today Waverley Baptist Church continues to thrive. It serves the local community and provides a welcoming space for all. Pastor Dave Harrison currently leads the congregation. He seeks to build God’s kingdom connecting people to Jesus Christ. He encourages discipleship and the fulfillment of God-given destiny. The story of Waverley Baptist Church is one of perseverance faith and community. It’s a testament to the enduring spirit of its members and the unwavering support of its community.
