In 1958 Carlos Sánchez Viamonte ran for Vice President. He ran with Dr. Alfredo L. Palacios. They shared a deep friendship. President Arturo U. Illia appointed him ambassador to the UN Human Rights Commission. He resigned after the 1966 coup.

Viamonte was a founder of the Latin American Union in 1925. He believed South American countries faced isolation without unification. He founded the Union with José Ingenieros and Alfredo L. Palacios. This organization promoted a shared destiny for Latin American people.

Carlos Sánchez Viamonte’s dedication to civil and political liberties led to persecution. He was arrested in 1915 for criticizing political abuses. The 1930 coup pushed him into politics. The Uriburu dictatorship dismissed him from his teaching post in 1931.

Joining the Socialist Party in 1931 he became a provincial deputy in 1935. He championed social and economic rights. He also supported gender equality. Elected as a national deputy in 1940 his term ended with the 1943 coup.

Carlos Sánchez Viamonte became a vocal opponent of totalitarianism. He was imprisoned during Perón’s presidency. Even Jorge Luis Borges called for his release. During the Peronist government his house was raided several times. He was detained twice.

Carlos Sánchez Viamonte refused offers to join the Supreme Court. His legacy lives on through his extensive writings. They include “Treatise on Habeas Corpus” and “Manual of Political Law.” He also wrote “Theory of the State”.
