Standing on the edge of London’s urban sprawl, Sanderstead offers an intriguing glimpse back in time. This village, once in the county of Surrey, became part of Croydon in 1965 but retains a distinct identity forged by its fascinating history. You can feel the historical echo in the very air you breathe. Let’s wander back to a time when the landscape was truly wild.

Sanderstead, a village nestled within the London Borough of Croydon, wasn’t always a suburb. It was a place of ancient woodlands and open chalk downs, the second highest point in London found right here. Long before the bustling city encroached on its borders, Sanderstead was a place of ancient settlements. Evidence of prehistoric human activity can be found in Sanderstead, including the remnants of a Bronze Age settlement. This is a place where history is literally ingrained in the soil, a testament to the passage of time and the enduring legacy of human presence.

Imagine the villagers going about their daily routine in late Saxon times. They farmed the land and worshipped at the humble church. All Saints’ Church, a Grade I listed building, stands at the heart of Sanderstead. This ancient church was built around 1230, a reminder of the faith that has been a constant in the village. Sanderstead has a rich history of notable residents, including those who helped shape the world beyond its borders.

Sanderstead Court, a magnificent manor house, stood here for over a century. The Atwood family, known for their long association with the village, resided here for 200 years. Its later use as a hotel and RAF base adds a layer of intrigue to its story. Sadly, fire devastated the building in 1944 and it was demolished a mere fourteen years later. Today, a three-storey block of flats stands where the magnificent Sanderstead Court once stood.

Sanderstead has a unique legacy, but perhaps its most curious aspect is the lack of a pub. It stands in contrast to the nearby town of Warlingham, which boasts around six. Perhaps the villagers prefer different types of entertainment. The cricket pitch, located on the site of a historic saw mill, tells a story of its own. This pitch has been used since the 1880s and continues to be a hub today for the Sanderstead Cricket Club. Their four teams play in the Surrey Championship, keeping the spirit of competition alive in this historic village.

The village of Sanderstead, although now a suburb, is an embodiment of history, a testament to the resilience of its identity. It is a place where ancient woodlands meet London’s modern landscape, a haven of stories and legends that you can still feel even today. It is a place that invites you to explore its past and ponder its future, a place that holds a unique charm for residents and visitors alike.
