Deep within Bonn’s embrace lies Friedhof Oberkassel, a cemetery with a story as layered as the earth it holds. Friedhof Oberkassel isn’t just a place of rest. It’s a living chronicle of Oberkassel’s evolution, reflecting the town’s social, religious, and industrial transformations. Originally, 19th-century Oberkassel had two distinct cemeteries. St. Cäcilia Catholic Church housed one, while the other, a Protestant cemetery, nestled near the old evangelical chapel and later town hall. Interestingly, industrialist Gabriel Adrian donated a small plot near his home, serving as a Protestant burial ground from 1855 to 1888. This stemmed from a conflict between Catholics and Protestants over burial rights, a testament to the religious tensions of the time. Many Protestants worked in the local brown coal and basalt mines, cement factories, and alum huts. As the existing Protestant cemetery reached capacity, the community acquired land on Langemarckstrasse in 1888 for Friedhof Oberkassel. It officially became the communal cemetery in 1905, leading to the closure of the denominational cemeteries. Friedhof Oberkassel bears the scars of World War II, which significantly altered its original layout. Over time, Oberkassel grew to encompass surrounding villages like Berghoven, Hosterbach, and Römlinghoven. This expansion continued through the municipal reorganizations of 1969 and the 1980s. The original evangelical cemetery by the chapel officially closed in 1983. At the heart of Friedhof Oberkassel sits a chapel built in 1959, replacing its predecessor with a simple, modern design. The cemetery holds notable graves. The Adrian family plots, transferred from the private Protestant cemetery, showcase classic Protestant style with inscriptions featuring biblical quotes. These are among the oldest graves at Friedhof Oberkassel. The Huser and Kalkuhl/Heel family graves offer glimpses into different eras. Simpler yet poignant are the Carstanjen and Hennicke family plots, enclosed by iron fences and marked by desk-shaped headstones. Friedhof Oberkassel houses the final resting places of influential figures who shaped Oberkassel. These include the Adrian, Huser, and Bleibtreu families, prominent in the mining, cement, and concrete industries. Also here lie Christian and Jean Uhrmacher, members of a significant basalt quarry-owning family, Mayor Duwe, teachers Kalkuhl/Heel and Meng, along with pastors and other important local figures. Friedhof Oberkassel tells a story of faith, industry, and community. It’s a peaceful haven where history whispers through the leaves and stones.
