UVM was founded November 16, 1960. José Ortega Romero led a group of academics and businessmen to create it. Initially, it was named Institución Harvard. It offered elementary, secondary, high school and undergraduate programs. These focused on accounting and business administration. The university soon concentrated on higher education levels. In 1968, the institution was consolidated. It adopted the name Universidad del Valle de México.
Since 1976, UVM began expanding. New campuses opened in Mexico City and surrounding areas. Other cities in Mexico also gained UVM campuses. UVM has awarded honorary doctorates to distinguished individuals. These include Antonio Villaraigosa and Alondra de la Parra. José Ángel Gurría and Dr. Mario Molina have also received this honor.
