“Lost records, you say?” a skeptical voice piped up from the back of the tour group. “Sounds like a convenient excuse to make things up!” I chuckled. “Not at all! While some of Eureka Township’s earliest records have vanished, the stories themselves are etched in the very landscape around us.” Here in Eureka Township, the whispers of the past still echo. This land, first claimed by C.M. Kingsley in the early 1850s, holds tales of forgotten claims, determined settlers, and a jubilant cry that gave the township its name. Eureka Township’s story began with a forgotten promise. Captain Dodd, while working on the extension of Dodd Road, became captivated by the land around Rice Lake. He instructed Kingsley to stake a claim for him, but then promptly forgot all about it. Kingsley, however, did not. He sent his friend, Benjamin Cashey, to settle the claim in 1854, joining him shortly after. That same year, another group arrived, led by Peter Sampson, Ole Torrison, and Ole Oleson. These Norwegian families settled near Chub Lake, establishing farms and setting down roots. More settlers followed, including a group from Indiana who became known as the “Hoosier Settlement.” Legend says that upon reaching this land, they exclaimed “Eureka!”, meaning “I have found it!”, and so the township’s name was born. Eureka Township officially came into being in 1858, thanks to the Dakota County Board of Commissioners. The first government meeting likely took place in Isaac VanDoren’s barn, a testament to the humble beginnings of this now thriving community. The township’s first leaders included Garrick Mallery as chair, Cornelius Wagner and Joseph Bean as supervisors, James Pool as clerk, and Isaac VanDoren as treasurer. Eureka Township may be within the Twin Cities metropolitan area, but its heart remains deeply connected to its agricultural heritage. It boasts the highest percentage of quality farmland in Dakota County, a legacy from those early settlers who transformed the prairie and oak savannah into fertile fields. Even today, agriculture remains the most extensive land use, despite the increasing development of residential areas. As we stand here, imagine those thirteen covered wagons arriving in 1855, filled with families from Indiana seeking a better life. Picture the bustling activity around Chub Lake and Rice Lake, the sounds of axes felling trees, and the sight of plows breaking the sod. Eureka Township is more than just a place on a map; it is a testament to the enduring spirit of those who sought a new beginning and found it, echoing that joyous cry, “Eureka!”.
