Picture this. You stand before the Ancienne Abbaye du Val a breathtaking testament to centuries past.

This remarkable site near Paris is far more than just ancient stones. It’s the second-oldest Cistercian foundation in Île-de-France a jewel from the 12th century. Imagine the Cistercian monks arriving in 1125. They sought a secluded spot to build their abbey. They chose the Vieux Moutier a wooded area near the Isle-Adam forest. Their initial home was simple. A few shelters marked their beginnings.

In 1136 Anselm I Lord of L’Isle-Adam gifted them land. This generous donation spurred growth. The abbey flourished. Its wealth grew from donations of land wood vineyards houses and even money. It was protected by powerful figures. Kings of France themselves sought refuge within its walls. Philippe VI de Valois and Charles V were among those who visited. The abbey served as a burial place for the Lords of L’Isle-Adam. Its prestige rose.

The Hundred Years’ War brought hardship. The abbey suffered damage and setbacks. It took years to recover. But the Ancienne Abbaye du Val persisted. Even its later transformations were striking. It became a private residence after its religious closure in 1790. A loyalist of Napoleon made it a secondary home hosting grand events.

Today remnants of this incredible past survive. A magnificent monastic dormitory one of France’s finest medieval examples remains nearly intact. Built between 1200 and 1220 it’s a long hall divided by columns. The capitals feature unique carvings of water leaves or hooks. The north gallery of the cloister though rebuilt in 1725 survives as well.

Remarkably the Ancienne Abbaye du Val has found a unique modern legacy. Mylène Farmer filmed her “Je te rends ton amour” music video here. Najoua Belyzel also filmed her “Gabriel” video at this site. Films like “Jeux interdits” and “Cet homme est dangereux” also used the abbey as a filming location.

The Ancienne Abbaye du Val whispers stories of faith power and resilience. It is a hidden gem a testament to the enduring spirit of history and faith. As you leave remember this site’s story. It seamlessly blends the medieval and modern worlds. It’s a captivating story of France itself.
