Can you hear the echoes of history whispering on Dickens Street? Right here at 39 Dickens Street stands the Elwood Shule. It’s more than just a building. It’s a testament to resilience, a beacon of faith, and a vibrant hub of the Elwood community. Elwood Shule officially known as the Elwood Talmud Torah Hebrew Congregation, has a story that begins in the early 1930s. It started humbly, as a prayer service held in the intimacy of a private home. The Elwood Shule congregation steadily grew, first finding a more permanent space at 40 Mitford Street in 1938. There, they established a part-time Talmud Torah, supplementing the regular prayer services. The pre-war period saw an influx of Jewish European immigrants, further expanding the congregation. A pivotal moment in the Elwood Shule’s history arrived with the end of World War II. The synagogue became a sanctuary for Holocaust survivors who sought refuge and community in Melbourne. During this time, services often overflowed into halls on Acland Street and Hennessy Avenue, a testament to the growing community. The need for a larger space led to the acquisition of a new home at 26 Avoca Avenue in 1942. The Elwood Shule finally found its current home on Dickens Street in the early 1950s, thanks to the efforts of synagogue President Abe Sicree. The new building, dedicated in 1957, marked a new chapter for the congregation. The following year, Rabbi Chaim Gutnick became Chief Minister, a position he held for 45 years. The Elwood Shule’s story continued to unfold. Moriah College of Elwood built a new school campus on the synagogue grounds in the early 1960s, later occupied by Mt Scopus Memorial College and Yesodei HaTorah College. The synagogue itself underwent renovations in 1973, expanding its capacity to over 1000 people. In 2003, Rabbi Mordechai Gutnick succeeded his father as Chief Minister, ensuring the continuation of the Elwood Shule’s legacy. The Elwood Shule is more than just bricks and mortar. It’s a symbol of enduring faith, community, and the power of resilience in the face of adversity. As you stand here today, remember the echoes of those who came before, their prayers, their hopes, and their dreams woven into the very fabric of this special place in Elwood.
