Oliver Plunkett was born in Ireland almost 400 years ago. Catholics then faced immense challenges. Many struggled to attend Mass and some were even forbidden. Many sought refuge where they could freely practice their faith.

During this turbulent time, Oliver was sent to Rome for his studies. He longed to return home. However, it was unsafe to return to Ireland after his ordination. So, Oliver remained in Rome and taught as a professor of Theology.

Twenty-two years passed before he could return to Ireland. This time, it was as Archbishop. Archbishop Plunkett began a ministry of reform. For over 11 years, Saint Oliver tirelessly visited his people. He established schools. He turned thousands of hearts towards God.

He renewed the Church. Saint Oliver pursued its mission. He continued the work of Christ. He helped those in need, even when forced into isolation. Towards the end of his ministry, he was unjustly arrested. He was condemned for treason.

In 1681, Saint Oliver was martyred for his faith. He died at the Tyburn tree in London. He was the last Catholic martyr in England.

Saint Oliver Plunkett’s Church celebrates its patron saint on July 11. This is his feast day. Saint Oliver is the patron saint of peace and reconciliation in Ireland.
