Built between 1773 and 1776 the Kleine Kirche stands proudly. It’s the oldest church in Karlsruhe’s city center. This unassuming little church holds a fascinating history. It wasn’t always a stone structure. The Kleine Kirche replaced a wooden church. That earlier church built between 1719 and 1721 for the Reformed congregation soon became dilapidated. Architect Wilhelm Jeremias Muller designed the red sandstone Kleine Kirche. Its style is Louis-seize. The tower’s pointed helmet is topped with a prince’s hat and a cross.

Inside the church features Corinthian-style pilasters. You’ll notice segmental arched windows and a coffered ceiling. A niche houses the pulpit altar. Above it sits the organ. This isn’t the original instrument. The original organ from 1950 was replaced in 2019. The new one boasts 22 registers. It was built by the Lenter organ workshop. Architect Klinkott designed its case.

The Kleine Kirche has experienced its share of hardship. Bombing in September 1944 damaged the building. Reconstruction from 1946 to 1949 restored it. The church bells too have a history. The current set is the third. One bell dates back to 1767. The others were cast by the Bachert bell foundry.

Today this significant Karlsruhe landmark serves multiple purposes. It hosts services for the Old and Middle Town congregation. The Evangelical student congregation also uses it. Two Orthodox congregations share the space. It’s also known as a ‘Church of Silence’ a place for quiet contemplation. The Kleine Kirche stands as a testament to Karlsruhe’s enduring spirit. It’s a blend of history resilience and faith. A visit to the Kleine Kirche is a journey through time. A reminder of the city’s past and its vibrant present.
