First they rented a room at 331 Rua Barata Ribeiro. On January 25 1910 they held their first service there. The Reverend Constancio Omegna led the congregation. It was a humble beginning but a crucial step for the Igreja Presbiteriana de Copacabana.
Their modest beginnings didn’t deter them. Their congregation grew quickly. Soon the rented space became too small. They moved to a building on Rua Barroso. The growth fueled their ambition for a proper church. On September 12 1911 they made a bold decision. They would buy land and build a church. The congregation rallied raising funds through various initiatives. On November 8 1911 they purchased the land at 297 Rua Barata Ribeiro.
Construction began January 12 1912. Architect Archimedes Trajano generously provided the plans free of charge. The construction was a slow and arduous process. Financial constraints frequently halted the work. The congregation didn’t give up. They prayed for divine intervention. Their prayers were answered through the generosity of Commendador Antonio Januzzi. He donated lumber and iron for the building. His support was critical in completing the church. Another generous member Felipe Duque Estrada contributed the beautiful gate.
Finally on September 20 1913 the Igreja Presbiteriana de Copacabana opened its doors. It was a triumph of faith and community. The cornerstone ceremony was a grand event. It included the placement of a Bible and other documents in a lead box. The building stands as a symbol of their enduring commitment to their faith.
