Sculpted from steel, La Oda de Hierro stands as a testament to Naucalpan’s industrial spirit. Created in 1967 by Eduardo Xochitiotzin, La Oda de Hierro, also known as the “Iron Ode,” was a gift from local industrialists. They envisioned a symbol that would represent Naucalpan’s growing industrial prowess. The sculpture’s location, at the intersection of Gustavo Baz and Avenida Primero de Mayo, was no accident. This spot quickly became a landmark for the burgeoning industrial area. La Oda de Hierro, reaching approximately 15 meters high, was assembled from donated steel plates, embodying the strength and resilience of the workers who fueled the city’s economic engine. Xochitiotzin intentionally left the sculpture unfinished, allowing the natural oxidation process to paint the steel with a rusty hue. This raw, unpolished look enhances its industrial aesthetic. Over time, La Oda de Hierro became deeply intertwined with the lives of the workers. It served as a common meeting point and even a bus stop, with people saying “drop me off at the Iron Monkey,” a nickname that persists today. La Oda de Hierro has faced its share of challenges. Vandalism and the encroachment of a highway overpass have threatened to obscure it from view. Despite these obstacles, the sculpture remains a powerful symbol of Naucalpan’s industrial heritage and the enduring spirit of its people. Recent restoration efforts demonstrate the city’s commitment to preserving this iconic artwork.
