The street was once a major road for the city. It even went through several suburbs. West Ogden Avenue was once a ten-mile-long road stretching from near the west side of Chicago to Riverside. It got its name in 1877 following the passing of the first mayor of Chicago, William B. Ogden. It was even a part of a 1909 plan to improve the thoroughfare. This plan brought about an extension of Ogden to Clark Street opposite Lincoln Park. The road was widened to four lanes. You might still see a few traces of the road’s old history along the way, including an auto repair shop. The most recent projects on the street center on how to better connect the West Side to the city. There is a focus on making the road safer and more accessible with new features, including seating areas. Many projects are planned for the avenue, and it is expected to be an important part of the West Side’s future.
