From a classroom at Maha Bodhi School to a majestic Tibetan monastery, the Sakya Tenphel Ling Temple’s journey is truly remarkable. Sakya Tenphel Ling Temple stands as a beacon of Tibetan Buddhism in Southeast Asia. Established in Pasir Ris in 1995, it marks a significant milestone as one of the first of its kind in the region. The temple’s roots trace back to the Singapore Buddha Sasana Society, formed in 1965. The society initially held its meetings in a humble classroom at Maha Bodhi School. It later occupied premises in Serangoon and Geylang before finally settling in Pasir Ris. The connection to the Sakya lineage deepened in 1978. Sakya Trizin Ngawang Kunga, the 41st head of the lineage, visited Singapore. He became the society’s Spiritual Patron, solidifying the temple’s place within the Sakya tradition. He later sent Ponlop Lama Tashi Tenzin to become the society’s first Resident Monk. This further strengthened the temple’s ties to the Sakya lineage. Sakya Tenphel Ling Temple is designed after a traditional Tibetan monastery, spanning three levels. The main prayer hall on the ground floor houses a magnificent Sakyamuni Buddha image, flanked by Manjushri and Tara shrines. Medicine Buddha images adorn the higher walls, creating a serene atmosphere for worship. Weekly Tara pujas and Chenrezig meditation sessions fill the hall with spiritual energy. The second level is a hub of learning. A library and classrooms are dedicated to the study of Buddha Dharma. The library opens its doors to the public on Sundays, offering access to a wealth of Buddhist texts. A dedicated team of librarians tirelessly works on Dharma archiving and publication, even welcoming volunteers to contribute. The third level is a sanctuary for the monks. It houses their quarters and a retreat room, a space reserved for meditation and spiritual practice. This area is generally off-limits to visitors to maintain tranquility and avoid disrupting the monks’ spiritual practices. In 2003, a roof was added. This allowed special rituals to be conducted regardless of the weather. The vibrant colors of the temple tell a story. The red, blue, and white hues, chosen according to Sakya color theory, represent Tibetan-Buddhist deities associated with wisdom, compassion, and power. Inside, shrines depict the Buddha, bodhisattvas like Tara and Chenrezig (also known as Guanyin), and stupas for Sakya spiritual leaders. The Sakya Tenphel Ling Temple is more than just a building. It’s a living testament to the enduring spirit of Tibetan Buddhism, a place where history and spirituality intertwine.
