Sundby Kirkegård is split in two. It is divided by the busy Kastrupvej. But don’t let the traffic fool you. This place holds stories of rest and recreation.
Sundby Kirkegård was established in 1872. It serves as Amager’s local cemetery. The adjacent Sundby Have enhances its peaceful setting. The cemetery spans approximately 10 hectares.
The old section west of Kastrupvej offers a space for quiet reflection. In 2011 a strip of land was given to Sundby Have. Now there is a dog park near Bredegrund.
The old part of Sundby Kirkegård will be repurposed. After 2020 it will no longer function as a cemetery. Instead it will transform into a city park.
Sundby Kirkegård offers various types of burial plots. You can find a Catholic section here. The grounds also include a chapel hall a crematorium and a columbarium.

The cemetery has winter and summer opening times. From October to March it is open from 7 AM to 7 PM. From April to September it extends its hours to 7 AM to 10 PM.
Sundby Kirkegård offers different options. There are burial plots for coffins urns and children.
You can rent Sundby Kapelsal. It is available for ceremonies. The chapel is located on the cemetery grounds at Kastrupvej 51.

In 2015 a development plan was created. It will guide the cemetery’s evolution in the coming years. The oldest section is called “Eftertænksomhedens Oase”. It primarily serves a recreational function. It is no longer possible to acquire burial plots here. The few remaining active sites cannot be renewed.
Sundby Kirkegård expanded three times. By 1922 it stretched east of Kastrupvej. This split the cemetery into old and new sections.
In the 1980s a decision was made. The old section would cease to be a cemetery in 2020.
A cemetery can only close when the burial easement expires. The easement is the time a body must remain undisturbed. For coffins it is 20 years. For urns it is 10 years. There have been few burials in the old section for many years.
Some exceptions were made. Spouses sometimes wished to be buried together. The last burial easement will expire in 2031. Until then the area remains a cemetery. The Area Renewal Sundby is transforming the space. It will become a more recreational cemetery park. It is known as “Oasis of Reflection”.
