In the heart of Budapest, nestled amidst the rolling hills and lush greenery, lies the Fácán Fogadó. This isn’t just a building; it’s a story waiting to be told. A story of emperors, artists, and secret agents, all woven into the fabric of this unique place. Fácán Fogadó translates to “Pheasant Inn,” a name that harkens back to a time when this area was a royal hunting ground. Legend says King Matthias Corvinus himself may have stalked pheasants on these very grounds. The inn’s history, however, begins much later, in the 18th century, as a modest establishment on the estate of a stonemason. It wasn’t until the mid-1850s that the Fácán Fogadó began its transformation into the grand complex we know today. The growing popularity of the inn prompted its then-owner to commission renowned architect József Hild to design a new building. This wasn’t just any inn; Hild envisioned a U-shaped summer hotel, complete with majestic columns and tower-like stairwells, a testament to the grandeur of the era. The original inn building wasn’t forgotten. A nearly square structure with a domed, columned terrace became the heart of the expanding complex. Over the years, the Fácán Fogadó evolved into a sprawling resort. Villas, gardens, and even a bathhouse sprung up around the central buildings. In the 1880s, a second hotel was built, later referred to as the “servants’ quarters,” though its purpose was likely more complex. The Fácán Fogadó’s heyday continued into the early 20th century, attracting Budapest’s elite and becoming a favorite spot for celebrations and leisurely afternoons. However, the good times wouldn’t last forever. By the late 1920s, the inn had fallen on hard times, and its assets were auctioned off. The estate, however, continued to operate under new ownership. Its history took a darker turn during World War II. The Fácán Fogadó and its surrounding gardens were used as an internment camp for Polish officers and later occupied by the Gestapo. After the war, it served as a university dormitory and then a training center for border guards. This new function led to significant changes. While the Hild villa and the later “Horthy villa” remained, many other buildings were demolished, replaced by functional but aesthetically unremarkable structures. Even the “servants’ quarters” were converted into low-income housing. The Fácán Fogadó remained under state control until 1990, its fate uncertain. Despite various investment proposals, none came to fruition. Today, the Horthy villa has been renovated and now serves as a modern school. The Hild-designed hotel awaits its own restoration, planned as a visitor center. The Fácán Fogadó, once a bustling hub of social life, now stands as a quiet reminder of Budapest’s rich and complex past.
