Lost in reverence, the Basilica de Nuestra Señora de Luján rises before us. It stands as a testament to faith and architectural grandeur. This impressive monument is not just a building. It is a symbol of Argentina itself.

The Basilica de Nuestra Señora de Luján is located about 70 km west of Buenos Aires. Here, in the city of Luján, this iconic basilica stands tall. It represents the devotion of a nation. Often mistakenly called a cathedral, the Basilica de Nuestra Señora de Luján is actually a basilica minor. The true cathedral resides in Mercedes.

Construction of the Basilica de Nuestra Señora de Luján began in 1890. It was an ambitious project spearheaded by Father Jorge María Salvaire. The architect, Uldéric Courtois, designed it in the neo-Gothic style. This architectural style connects it to other significant churches in Argentina. These include the cathedrals of La Plata, Mar del Plata, and San Isidro.

As you gaze upon the Basilica de Nuestra Señora de Luján, notice its dimensions. It stretches 104 meters in length. Its width reaches 68.5 meters at the transept. Two towering spires rise 106 meters. Each is topped with a grand cross. These crosses dominate the skyline.

Inside the Basilica de Nuestra Señora de Luján, two organs reside. A smaller one sits in the side nave. The main organ, grand and imposing, is above the entrance. Both were crafted by the French firm Mutin-Cavaillé Coll. The larger organ has the highest air pressure of any in Argentina. It was designed to fill the basilica with sound. Sadly, it is currently out of use. It awaits restoration.

The history of the Basilica de Nuestra Señora de Luján is intertwined with the story of Argentina. The land it occupies was once known as Plaza Real. Later, it became Plaza de la Justicia. Today, it is Plaza Belgrano. It has served as a stage for public events. It has hosted festivals and even bullfights.

The origins of the Basilica de Nuestra Señora de Luján trace back to 1685. A small chapel was erected. By 1730, it became a parish. As the congregation grew, a larger temple was needed. This new church opened in 1763. However, it was demolished in 1905 to make way for the current basilica.

Father Salvaire started construction on the present Basilica de Nuestra Señora de Luján in 1890. The cornerstone lies beneath the main altar. It contains significant artifacts. These include an Acta Fundacional signed by Archbishop León Federico Aneiros.

The basilica’s construction faced challenges. The proximity to the Luján River caused flooding. This prevented the use of the crypt for ceremonies. Despite these obstacles, the basilica was completed in 1935. It stands as a symbol of perseverance and devotion.

Declared a National Historic Monument in 1998, the Basilica de Nuestra Señora de Luján is a treasure. Between 2005 and 2009, restoration work revitalized its exterior. Today, it continues to draw pilgrims and visitors.

The Basilica de Nuestra Señora de Luján is more than just a building. It embodies the spirit of Argentina. It is a place of worship. It is a monument to history. It is an architectural masterpiece. It is a destination where faith meets art. It is a place where every stone tells a story.
