Who would have thought that a place called “Blessing” would hold such sorrow? Right here, before the Site of Berachah Home and Cemetery Plaque, lies a story of hope, struggle, and ultimately, loss. The plaque itself is the only physical reminder of what was once a refuge for “erring girls” – the Berachah Industrial Home for the Redemption of Erring Girls. Founded in 1903 by Reverend James Toney Upchurch and his wife Maggie, the home aimed to provide shelter and support for single, pregnant women, offering them a chance at a new life. This wasn’t just a place for women to give birth; it was a place of industry and faith. The women learned valuable skills like printing, sewing, and nursing, all while receiving religious instruction and raising their children in a safe environment. The home’s founder, Reverend Upchurch, was a tireless advocate. He traveled tirelessly, preaching and publishing to raise funds, ensuring these women received the help they desperately needed. He even formed the Berachah Band, composed of the home’s residents, to spread their message of hope and redemption through music. Sadly, the story of the Berachah Home doesn’t have a happy ending. The Great Depression took its toll, and despite Upchurch’s efforts, the home was forced to close its doors in 1935. While the buildings are gone, the memory of the Berachah Home, a place that provided refuge and a chance for a new beginning, lives on in this plaque and the stories it silently whispers.
