What if train tracks could whisper secrets? Here at Intercambio Midland, they do. Intercambio Midland isn’t your typical passenger station. It’s a nexus of whispers from the past, a place where the echoes of steam engines and the clatter of freight cars mingle with the ghosts of ambitious dreams. This is a story of connections, of a railway line striving to find its place in a bustling city. This is the story of the Ferrocarril Midland de Buenos Aires.

Intercambio Midland was born from the vision of Enrique Lavalle, who secured a concession in 1904 to build a narrow-gauge railway. This railway was originally planned to run from Puente Alsina to Carhué. But from the start, the Ferrocarril Midland, or FCM, as it became known, was hampered by a provincial concession. It couldn’t enter the federal territory of Buenos Aires. This sparked a clever solution. In 1912, the FCM created Intercambio Midland, a transfer station. Passengers would disembark their Midland train and board a Ferrocarril del Sud train. This train, after a brief reversal, would take them to Sola station within the city limits. A loophole, a workaround, a testament to the Midland’s persistence.

This station wasn’t just about passengers. Intercambio Midland was a vital cargo hub. It facilitated the exchange of goods between the Midland, the Oeste railway, and the Sud railway. Imagine the organized chaos: goods being shifted, loaded, and unloaded between trains of varying gauges. The station boasted extensive sidings, a warehouse, and even a livestock loading area. This was a place of industry, a crucial link in the supply chain of a growing metropolis. One of the most important sidings served the nearby Wilson meatpacking plant on the Riachuelo River, a testament to the Midland’s role in the city’s economy.

The Midland railway’s fortunes took a turn in the 1970s. The need to connect the southern section of the Ferrocarril General Belgrano to the port of Buenos Aires further cemented Intercambio Midland’s strategic importance. This connection ensured the flow of goods through the heart of the city, with Intercambio Midland as the linchpin. However, despite its early ingenuity and later strategic importance, the Midland railway eventually met a sad fate. Beset by financial difficulties and operational challenges, the line beyond Libertad was closed in 1977. Intercambio Midland, once the gateway to the city for the FCM, became a silent testament to a railway’s ambition and eventual demise.

Today, as you stand here, you can almost hear the whispers of the past. The tracks may be quiet, but the story of Intercambio Midland continues to resonate. It’s a story of connection and innovation. A story of a railway that fought to bridge the gap between province and city. A story etched in the very foundations of this place.
