Deep within the tranquil farmlands near Clarks Beach, lies a secret whispered on the winds of Manukau Harbour. This is the story of Seagrove. Seagrove wasn’t always a peaceful pasture. During World War II, it transformed into a clandestine airbase, a hidden guardian of Auckland. Officially known as Seagrove Aerodrome, its existence was a closely guarded secret. The land, originally belonging to the Clark family, was commandeered for the war effort. As a gesture of goodwill, the name “Seagrove,” taken from the family homestead, was given to the base. Can you imagine the surprise of airmen from nearby Ardmore aerodrome? They’d see fighters appearing out of thin air, only to vanish just as quickly. Seagrove was a phantom base, a vital cog in Auckland’s defense. By 1943, Seagrove Aerodrome became an auxiliary to the larger bases at Mangere (now Auckland International Airport) and Ardmore. Here, Curtiss P-40 Kittyhawk fighters and Douglas SBD dive bombers were assembled and deployed. The base boasted two 5000-foot cinder runways, laid out in a boomerang shape. Temporary barracks, revetments, and maintenance facilities dotted the landscape. After the war ended in 1945, Seagrove’s secret was finally revealed. The base was decommissioned, briefly serving as a surplus aircraft dump before being returned to the Clark family in the 1950s. The runways became a playground for speedway enthusiasts, hosting drag races and speed trials until the surfaces deteriorated. Today, a small plaque commemorates Seagrove’s wartime role. The ghostly outline of the runways is still visible from the air and on Google Earth. Seagrove remains a hidden gem of history, a testament to a time when secrecy and sacrifice were paramount. Its story, though hushed for years, continues to echo across the farmland, a reminder of the hidden guardians who protected Auckland from the shadows.
