Alastair Sim was born in Edinburgh in 1900. He decided to pursue acting after the First World War. He initially worked as a lecturer in elocution. Later, he was a drama teacher. His first professional production was Othello in London in 1930.

Alastair Sim became a popular West End performer. He remained so until his death in 1976. He appeared in over fifty British films from 1935. One iconic role was Scrooge in A Christmas Carol 1951. He was also known for his comically sinister performances.

During the height of his career Alastair Sim and his wife Naomi Platt moved here. This four-bedroom flat in Frognal Gardens was their home for over twenty years.

The unveiling of the Alastair Sim Blue Plaque was a special event. Alastair Sim’s daughter, Merlith McKendrick, attended. Actors Sir Ian McKellen and Dame Barbara Winsor also joined the ceremony.

Alastair Sim’s portrayal of Scrooge is highly regarded. Many consider it the best on-screen depiction. Another famous role was in The Belles of St Trinian’s 1954. He played the dual roles of headmistress Miss Fritton and her brother Clarence.

Alastair Sim was a versatile actor. He starred in Green for Danger and The Happiest Days of Your Life. He appeared in An Inspector Calls and Stage Fright. He turned down a role in Whisky Galore. He said he could not bear professional Scotsmen.

Alastair Sim sued H J Heinz over a baked beans advertisement in 1959. The voiceover sounded remarkably like him. He felt it would prostitute his art. He lost the case but showed the importance of his unique voice.

He was Rector of the University of Edinburgh from 1948 to 1951. He received an honorary Doctor of Law. He was appointed CBE in 1953. He refused a knighthood in the early 1970s.

Alastair Sim died in London in 1976. His wife Naomi published a memoir called Dance and Skylark. It covered their fifty years together.
