This historic plaque marks the site of the Brown Cottage. It was built in 1905. The house was an elegant Queen Anne style structure, with six rooms downstairs and one large room upstairs. It featured an unusual variety of materials, an elaborate roof, and an asymmetrical plan. Thomas and Mattie Brown, the home’s original owners, built it after they moved to Wylie in 1886. They were early residents of Wylie, which was established on a newly constructed railroad line between Dallas and Paris. Thomas Brown died just two years after the house was built. His widow, Mattie Brown, continued to live there until her death in 1922. The house was then inherited by the Browns’ adopted daughter, Tennie Lee Creel. The house remained in her family until 1931. Sadly, the original Brown Cottage is no longer standing, but this plaque serves as a reminder of the family who lived here.
