Imagine the scene in 1931. The Cia Territorial da Ilha do Governador launches a land development project. This transforms a humble area once called Tapera into the modern Praia da Bandeira. The neighborhood’s main street honors Captain Barbosa a local and a great nationalist. His name reflects the area’s strong sense of identity.
Even before 1931 Praia da Bandeira existed. It was a small community. It grew up between the beach and the hills. The area flourished until the 1960s. The construction of the first bridge connecting the island to the mainland in 1950 changed things. Increased development impacted the old neighborhood.
Despite these changes Praia da Bandeira retained its charm. In 1981 it became one of fourteen neighborhoods. It’s the smallest after Zumbi and Safade. Its quality of life index in 2000 was 0.858. This was the 46th best in Rio de Janeiro. It was considered average.
