This Baroque beauty boasts a history as rich as its intricate facade. Its current form stands as a testament to resilience. For centuries this site has held a church. Originally built by the Dominicans around 1230. It endured the devastation of the Tatar invasion. Later the church fell under Turkish rule and was destroyed.
Imagine the bustling streets of 18th-century Budapest. The sounds of hammers and chisels filled the air. This church was rebuilt between 1700 and 1765. Its magnificent Baroque style emerged from the ashes. The Dominicans were dissolved by Joseph II. In 1785-86 the church passed to the English Ladies.
A significant event further cemented the Szent Mihály arkangyal-templom’s place in history. Following World War II the Szent Jobb (Holy Right Hand) a relic of Saint Stephen was returned to Hungary. This precious artifact was housed within the Szent Mihály arkangyal-templom. It remained there until the dissolution of the English Ladies in 1950.
The church has weathered many storms both literal and figurative. Minor floods in 1799 and 1809 tested its strength. The great flood of 1838 submerged the church to a depth of two meters. A devastating fire in 1809 destroyed the roof and two towers. The Szent Mihály arkangyal-templom has been meticulously restored and renovated several times. This includes both interior and exterior work. The church received a new organ in 1892 and the restoration of its ceiling paintings and other aspects started in 1997. Today the Szent Mihály arkangyal-templom stands as a vibrant center for the community. It hosts children’s art exhibitions and regular concerts by the Liszt Ferenc Choir.
