Gazing up at the Barrowcliffe Place Overbridge, imagine the transformation of this once-forgotten space. Barrowcliffe Place was originally earmarked for a motorway. It became an urban regeneration challenge for Eke Panuku. This area in Manukau, South Auckland, held the potential to revitalize the town center and address the growing need for housing. The Auckland Council, recognizing this potential, partnered with Eke Panuku to create a thriving neighborhood. Eke Panuku collaborated with Kotuitui Limited Partnership and Puhinui Park Limited Partnership. Together they transformed Barrowcliffe Place into Kotuitui Place. This involved integrating 6 Homestar housing with the Puhinui Stream Reserve. They also improved connectivity to the Manukau Town Centre and incorporated sustainable stormwater design. The Barrowcliffe Place Overbridge itself plays a vital role in this revitalization. It has been reconfigured from a partially completed motorway overbridge into a multi-purpose walkway. It accommodates pedestrians, cyclists, and low-speed traffic, connecting Barrowcliffe Place to central Manukau. This bridge wasn’t just about practicality. It represents the unique identity of the area, with its waka-inspired design paying homage to the rich history and interconnectedness of Manukau. The inside of the bridge evokes the carved interior of a waka, while the lights symbolize its paddles. This design is a collaboration between Eke Panuku and mana whenua. It incorporates input from advisors from Te Akitai Waiohua, Ngati Tamaoho, and Ngaati Whanaunga. It also has support from Waka Kotahi. The Barrowcliffe Place Overbridge also features enhanced safety measures. These include a separated cycleway, wider footpaths, and anti-throw screens. The bridge stands as a testament to the transformation of Barrowcliffe Place. It’s a symbol of connection, both to the town center and to the cultural heritage of the area.
