Did you know that Helen C. Peirce School of International Studies wasn’t always a school focused on global studies? This very building opened its doors in September 1915. It was simply named Helen C. Peirce School. It was named to honor Helen Caroline Peirce. She was the founding president of the Lake View Women’s Club. This remarkable woman played a significant role in Chicago’s social fabric.

The Lake View Women’s Club wasn’t just a social gathering. It was a powerful force for good in the community. Their first project? A kindergarten in a poverty-stricken area called Clay Holes. Can you imagine the dedication and foresight required to launch such an initiative? The Club covered the rent heat and maintenance. The Chicago Board of Education provided teachers and supplies. This arrangement continued until 1898. That’s when the Board took over full financial responsibility.

The school’s focus shifted in 1993. It became part of the Chicago Board of Education’s Specialty School Program. Then it officially became the Helen C. Peirce School of International Studies. Since then each school year explores a different country.

More changes followed. A new section was added to the building in 1999. In 2010 the school joined the International Baccalaureate program. This program runs from 6th to 8th grade. Students now have access to the IB program from pre-K through 12th grade. The school partners with Senn High School for a smooth transition to the IB Diploma Program.

But the story of Helen C. Peirce School of International Studies isn’t just about curriculum and expansion. It’s about vibrant murals. Students and the Green Star Movement collaborated to create stunning artwork. They painted a world map and national flags. They also created beautiful garden-themed murals. One even features hand-sculpted bees made by the students themselves. These murals are more than decoration. They reflect the school’s global outlook. They showcase the creativity and spirit of its students.

So stand here. Take in the legacy of Helen C. Peirce School of International Studies. It’s a place where history community service and global learning come together. This is more than just a school. It’s a testament to the impact one woman and a dedicated community can have.
