Did misfortune ever strike a church twice? Here at the First Christian Church of Duncanville Plaque, we uncover a story of resilience. The First Christian Church of Duncanville traces its beginnings back to the early 1890s. Reverend G.Q. Grasty from nearby Lancaster held informal services in Duncanville. Local tradition credits Robert N. Daniel and his wife Frances with formally establishing the congregation in 1893. They were among the seventeen charter members. The first services were held in a schoolhouse. In 1913, a sanctuary was built, funded by Robert and Frances. Frances later deeded the land to the congregation in 1916. Tragedy struck in 1917 when the sanctuary burned down. Adding insult to injury, the bank holding the replacement funds failed. Undeterred, the congregation built a new sanctuary in 1919. They expanded it in 1923, adding a classroom, choir loft, and two wings. Weekly services commenced in 1949. The church purchased land from a Daniel family member in 1953. A new sanctuary was built on this site in 1959. An educational wing was added in 1968 and a fellowship hall in 1988. The First Christian Church of Duncanville continues to serve the community with various programs. This plaque, dedicated in 1993, commemorates their enduring spirit.
