Did you know that Holy Trinity Seminary in Dallas wasn’t always the place it is today? Founded in 1965 near the end of the Second Vatican Council this seminary has a rich history. Bishop Thomas K Gorman established it. He wanted seminarians to receive a sound education within the Catholic intellectual tradition. That’s why he linked it to the University of Dallas. Imagine seminarians studying alongside other students. This created a unique atmosphere. It fostered a blend of faith and reason.

For its first twenty years Holy Trinity Seminary offered an eight-year program. This covered both collegiate and theological formation. Seminarians came from dioceses across the USA. Then in 1986 things changed. Bishop Thomas A Tschoepe and Bishop Joseph A Fiorenza decided to cooperate. They created a collegiate program at Holy Trinity. A graduate program was set up at St Mary’s Seminary in Houston. This division of labor streamlined the educational path.

But the story of Holy Trinity Seminary isn’t just about academics. It’s also about community. Seminarians perform house jobs. They have a weekly communal work order. This teaches responsibility and fosters a sense of shared ownership. The seminary isn’t just a place of learning. It’s a home. A place where future priests build relationships and learn teamwork. In 2023 a propaedeutic stage was added. This gives seminarians a year to focus on their relationship with Christ. It lays a foundation for their life centered in Christ.

Sadly Holy Trinity Seminary also has a darker chapter. The 1970s saw accusations of ignoring sexual abuse. Specifically cases involving seminarians who were abusive towards others. This is a painful part of the seminary’s past. It highlights the need for transparency and accountability within any institution. One infamous case involved Rudolph Kos. He entered the seminary despite an abusive record. He was later ordained and removed from ministry after more abuse.

Today Holy Trinity Seminary continues its mission. It prepares men for the priesthood. It has served over 40 arch/dioceses across 18 states. That’s a reach of over 14 million Catholics. The seminary’s influence is far-reaching. It shapes the lives of many future priests. It contributes to the spiritual fabric of the United States. Standing here before Holy Trinity Seminary you feel its history. You can almost hear the echoes of past and present seminarians. Their shared dedication to faith and service. This is a place of learning of faith and of lasting impact.
