Perhaps the most striking feature of Morro Dona Marta is not just its height. It’s the story etched into every brick and corner. Morro Dona Marta is a favela in Rio de Janeiro. It sits within the neighborhoods of Botafogo and Laranjeiras. This hill, Morro Dona Marta, got its name way back in the 17th century. A priest bought these lands. He honored his mother Marta by naming the hill after her.

The name Santa Marta came later. In the early 20th century, a devotee of Santa Marta brought the saint’s picture here. The picture was placed at the top of the hill. A chapel was built. People settled around it. Thus, the Santa Marta slum was formed.

Morro Dona Marta offers stunning panoramic views. From here, you can see Christ the Redeemer. You can also see Sugar Loaf, Botafogo Beach, and Rodrigo de Freitas Lake. The viewpoint is aptly named Dona Marta Lookout.

In 2008, Santa Marta made history. It became the first pacified favela in Rio. This meant an end to the reign of drug traffickers. The community transformed.

One of the most iconic moments for Morro Dona Marta was Michael Jackson’s visit. In 1996, he filmed “They Don’t Care About Us” here. This brought international attention to the favela. A statue of Michael Jackson now stands on the slab where he performed. It’s a tribute to his impact. Madonna, Alicia Keys, and Beyoncé also visited between 2009 and 2010. The Fast Five movie also filmed scenes here.

The community faced a name identity crisis. The hill was named Dona Marta. However, residents called the favela Santa Marta. In 2007, the city officially recognized both names. Dona Marta refers to the hill. Santa Marta refers to the favela.

Santa Marta has a samba school. It is called Mocidade Unida do Santa Marta. Founded in 1992, it brings the community together. The school’s colors are blue and white.

In 2010, a Dutch art project transformed Cantão Square. Artists painted 34 houses. This created a vibrant work of art. It changed the face of the entrance to the hill.

Morro Dona Marta has a rich history. From its origins as a priest’s tribute to its rise as a cultural hub, it is a vibrant community. It stands as a testament to the spirit and resilience of its residents.

Today, Santa Marta welcomes visitors from all over the world. Guided tours offer a glimpse into daily life. These tours support the local community. They provide an opportunity to see the favela through the eyes of its residents. So, when you visit Morro Dona Marta, remember its story. Remember its struggles and triumphs. See it as more than just a favela. See it as a place of history, culture, and community.
