“Step back in time with me.” Today, we explore Riachuelo. This neighborhood sits in Rio de Janeiro’s North Zone.
Riachuelo’s story began on the lands of an old farm. This farm was called Engenho Novo. The land was divided into smaller plots. Later, these plots were developed into housing areas.
The Riachuelo Railway Station opened in 1869. It was originally named Riachuelo do Rio. Today, it is simply known as Riachuelo Station.
In the early 20th century, the Clube Riachuelense was a hub of entertainment. Eduardo Magalhães staged theatrical performances there. The Riachuelo Tennis Club was also a point of pride. It won Carioca basketball championships in 1937, 1940, and 1941.
Riachuelo officially became a recognized neighborhood on July 23, 1981. This was established by Decree N° 3158. Later, Decree N° 5280 in August 23, 1985, made some alterations.
Riachuelo is part of the greater Méier area. Its main streets are busy. They connect the suburbs to the city center. These streets include Rua Ana Néri, Rua 24 de Maio, and Avenida Marechal Rondon. The Estrada de Ferro Central do Brasil railway line cuts through the neighborhood. Riachuelo borders Jacaré, Sampaio, Rocha, and Vila Isabel. The Serra do Engenho Novo separates it from Vila Isabel. In 2000, Riachuelo had a high Human Development Index. It was 0.905. This ranked it 23rd in Rio de Janeiro.
Here in Riachuelo, you will find the SENAI building. It is the largest vocational center in Latin America. SENAI offers many courses for the industrial sector. You can find many shops here. Automotive businesses are particularly common.
The Faculdade CCAA is also located in Riachuelo. It is next to the Grupo CCAA printing park. The college offers courses in Administration, Social Communication, and Languages. It also provides extension courses. These courses aim to improve students’ job skills.
Before 1970, the Escola Moreira operated at the same address as Grupo CCAA. This school had boarding and day student programs. It featured a large wooded area. The main house and the Chapel of São Geraldo were located there. The administration of the school was in the main house.
The Riachuelo Rio Theater adds to the cultural scene. It opened in August 2016. The theater occupies a building dating back to 1890. This building is a historical landmark. It has served as a casino, theater, and movie theater. In 1929, it was the site of the first sound film shown in Brazil.
The theater’s restoration preserved much of its history. The Neo-Moorish facade remains. It was designed by the Spanish architect Adolfo de los Rios. The renovated theater now hosts lectures, shows, movies, and performances.
Riachuelo blends history with modern life. Its past as a farm area and a railway hub have shaped its identity. Today, it is a neighborhood with a mix of education, industry, and culture.
