Could you imagine doors made of leather? This is how the story of Iglesia Católica Madre del Redentor – Carapungo begins. This church stands in a place steeped in history. The area known as Carapungo has a unique past. Its name comes from the Kichwa language.
Carapungo may mean “Puerta de Cuero” or Leather Door. In the 19th and 20th centuries locals made doors from goat or cow leather. Wood was scarce. The climate was dry.
Another theory suggests “Puerta de los Caras” or Door of the Caras. The Quitu-Cara indigenous group lived here before the Incas. Thus Carapungo could mean entrance to their land.
