Carapungo may mean “Puerta de Cuero” or Leather Door. In the 19th and 20th centuries locals made doors from goat or cow leather. Wood was scarce. The climate was dry.

Another theory suggests “Puerta de los Caras” or Door of the Caras. The Quitu-Cara indigenous group lived here before the Incas. Thus Carapungo could mean entrance to their land.

Today Iglesia Católica Madre del Redentor – Carapungo serves its community. You can find it at Río Cayambe and Río Marañón. This is in the second stage of Sector B. The church’s phone number is 02 2420 414.

The parish office keeps specific hours. It is open Tuesdays through Fridays from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM. Then it reopens from 2:30 PM to 6:00 PM. On Saturdays it is open from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM.

Mass times at Iglesia Católica Madre del Redentor – Carapungo are varied. On Mondays mass is at 6:00 AM. Tuesdays through Fridays mass is at 10:00 AM and 6:00 PM. Saturdays offer a 7:00 PM mass. Sundays have masses at 7:00 AM 9:00 AM 11:00 AM 5:00 PM and 6:00 PM.

The parish priest is P. Elias Mauricio Ontaneda Ayala. He is a diocesan priest.
