Have you heard the story of how the Gampriner Seele came to be? It’s a tale of nature’s power and the resilience of life.

The Gampriner Seele, the only lake in all of Liechtenstein, is nestled in the village of Gamprin-Bendern. It’s a truly unique and captivating sight. But what you see today wasn’t always a beautiful lake. Gampriner Seele was formed in 1927, not by an ancient glacier or volcanic activity, but by a powerful flood of the Rhine River. The powerful rush of water carved the nearby landscape, leaving behind a deep depression that filled with water. It’s a reminder of the force that nature can unleash.

This wasn’t always the ideal spot for a lake. In the early days, it was basically a giant pit full of trash. But luckily, nature can heal itself if given a chance. In 1961, the Liechtenstein government took a stand for the lake, declaring it a nature reserve. They started cleaning the area, improving the water quality to a decent B grade. Then they added a pipeline to pump in fresh water and a steady flow of much-needed oxygen. This finally made the Gampriner Seele habitable for wildlife.

And wildlife it attracted, with crayfish being the first to set up shop. They thrived in the newly cleaned waters. Over the years, more animals found their way to the lake, with elegant swans being one of the highlights. They first arrived in 1972 at the Sàgaweiher in Nendeln. In time, a few of them discovered the Gampriner Seele and started to call it home. Today, you might catch a glimpse of these beautiful birds gliding across the surface, their presence adding to the charm of this remarkable lake.

The Gampriner Seele has become a symbol of sustainability and resilience. A place where nature has bounced back after a devastating flood, offering a haven for diverse life. It’s a place where you can feel the connection between humans and nature and appreciate the beauty of a simple lake. This is a story that reminds us that hope and renewal are always possible.
