The unusual southerly orientation of Højdevangskirken strikes you first. Why south instead of east like most churches?

Højdevangskirken a church in Copenhagen’s Amager district is more than just a pretty building. It’s a testament to community spirit and a unique architectural choice. Consecrated on April 14 1935 it stands as a symbol of a time when the local community rallied to build their own place of worship.

The story behind its unusual south-facing orientation is fascinating. The land was longer from north to south. The church plan had to be designed to fit the available space. This resulted in a unique arrangement unlike many churches.

This wasn’t a project solely funded by the Copenhagen Church Fund. Local pastor C V Brenk spearheaded a fundraising campaign. He managed to collect 50000 kr. The remaining funds were secured with the help of the Social Democratic Minister of the Church NPL Dahl. This demonstrates a remarkable blend of community effort and political support.

Architect Poul Staffeldt Mathiesen designed Højdevangskirken in a vernacular style reminiscent of late Gothic Zealand village churches. Its red brick exterior and simple yet elegant design make it a beautiful example of functional architecture. The church originally held only one bell. A second bell wasn’t added until December 8 1998. Inside Højdevangskirken can accommodate approximately 225 people. The organ a generous gift from a local businessman is a cherished part of the church.

Højdevangskirken isn’t just a church. It’s a living testament to a community’s dedication and a unique architectural decision. It’s a charming blend of history and local character that continues to serve the people of Amager.
