Darkness. That is the defining characteristic of Runaway Mountain. This steel indoor coaster offers a ride like no other. Here at Six Flags Over Texas, Runaway Mountain is not just a roller coaster. It’s a plunge into the unknown.

Runaway Mountain opened on June 12, 1996. Werner Stengel designed this thrilling ride. Its slogan captured the essence of the experience: “The coaster that dares the darkness.” This attraction stands in the Old South & France section of the park. Before Runaway Mountain, this location housed Skull Island and later the Spinnaker ride.

As you approach Runaway Mountain, notice the queue. It is heavily themed to resemble a mining operation in a swamp. The queue prepares you for the adventure. Once inside, you meet Gator McGee. This eccentric character claims ownership of the mountain. Gator gives boarding instructions, adding to the immersion.

Now comes the fun part. The Runaway Mountain is an enclosed coaster. Once the train departs the station, complete darkness engulfs you. The ride reaches a height of 65 feet. It hits speeds of up to 40 mph. Prepare for high-speed twists and turns. Many riders feel an intense banked turn. They often mistakenly think it is an inversion. But don’t worry, there are no inversions on Runaway Mountain.

The track layout is similar to “Windstorm” coasters. However, Runaway Mountain has custom track and trains. This design provides a smoother ride. If you want the most intense experience, sit in the back. The tight, twisting drop in the middle feels more powerful there.

Did you know that Runaway Mountain is a landmark? American Coaster Enthusiasts recognize its historical significance. It’s a testament to innovative ride design. Runaway Mountain offers a unique and thrilling experience. It’s a must-ride for any coaster enthusiast.
