Have you ever wondered about the secrets held within these ancient walls? Welcome to the Capilla de San Francisco de Asis a hidden gem in Mexico City. This chapel stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of faith and resilience. It is all that remains of a once grand Franciscan complex. This complex was the largest monastic construction in New Spain. It was established in 1525.

The Capilla de San Francisco de Asis was not the original structure. Two earlier churches were built on this site. They both failed due to the soft soil under Mexico City. The current chapel a masterpiece of Churrigueresque Baroque style was completed in 1716. Its construction began on November 4 1710 the day of San Carlos.

The main facade of the Capilla de San Francisco de Asis is hidden. The entrance we see today actually leads to the Balvanera Chapel. This chapel was added in 1766. It’s attributed to Lorenzo Rodriguez a leading architect of the Mexican Baroque period. He also designed the Metropolitan Tabernacle. The Balvanera Chapel’s original statues were sadly removed. However its exquisite volutes sculpted leaves and flowers remain. The estipite columns with medallions add to its beauty.

Imagine the countless stories these stones could tell. They’ve witnessed pivotal moments in Mexican history. The funeral mass for Hernán Cortés was held here. The Marquis of Gelves sought refuge within its walls. Even the end of the Mexican War of Independence was celebrated with a Te Deum here. The Capilla de San Francisco de Asis has also seen quieter moments of devotion. It was a place of baptism for early Japanese visitors to New Spain. Some were baptized here as part of Hasekura Tsunenaga’s embassy.

Sadly much of the original convent was lost. The Laws of Reform and a sale in 1868 led to its demolition. The land was divided into smaller plots. Today buildings like the Torre Latinoamericana occupy what was once the convent’s grounds. Yet the Capilla de San Francisco de Asis endures. It serves as a powerful reminder of Mexico City’s rich past. It stands as a symbol of faith history and architectural grandeur. Take a moment to reflect on the layers of time embedded within this remarkable chapel. The Capilla de San Francisco de Asis will always remind us of Mexico City’s rich history.
